Read only

Have clean installed Vista64 RC1 and everything seemed fine. On trying to
save anything, I find that ALL files are read-only. I checked the security
and they are set up with the correct privileges so I try deleting the check
on read-only. Everything seems to go fine with all the lower level files
flashing across the screen. However, when I check properties again the
check mark is still there and no chance to save anything. Any suggestions
appreciated.

I show the All Users folder as one with a shortcut arrow, which I suppose
means something. Those might be protected by the security. If you alter
those files, you may have a problem setting up new users, but I haven't
tried it. A specific file name might help, just pick one and give the
path to it.

Can you copy the files in your user folders normally? I don't seem to show
a read only check on my files, but I do show hidden on some. You might also
realize that if you see a dark square in the read only box, that is not a
check mark, but I don't know what it means.

Have you looked at the parent folder and tried changing permissions for it
or not allowing permissions to be passed along to the particular file you
are working with?

Sorry I wasn't clear, I meant each of the folders in the Users folder and
all sub-folders.

Hi John,
Every file in the users area in my install is marked "read only" however I
can write, change, etc. as normal.

I had assumed, apparently incorrectly, that that was the problem. The
problem is that it will not allow me to write to or change anything. An
error message pops up stating that an error has occurred (no further
information) I'm not currently using it much, but it is annoying for the
wife who only wants to add favourites when she surfs. I tried to find a
solution and thought that was it, as it would have been on XP.

Actually, it's the same on XP. All folders seemingly have the 'read only'
detent filled, but in actuality that attribute does not apply to folders,
only to files. It's not filled in, it's greyed out. Problems with writing to
a folder or editing files therein is usually related to permissions.

As I had mentioned, the one that is most annoying is when my wife tries to
save favourites, she gets the error message. An
error message pops up stating that an error has occurred (no further
information)
