read-only

I created a document in Word 2003 on Wednesday, inserted it into a new
document on Saturday. I then went to edit the original document, which was
saved as .doc, but when I tried to edit the original document, ("read-only")
appeared after the file name after I opened it.

I don't understand why, I didn't save it as a read-only, nor did I change
any settings or add a password.

What happend? Can I change this without having to save the file to a new
name?

I have Word 2003, Windows XP, service pack 2, and 504 MB of RAM.

Any help would be appreciated.

Shauna,

Thanks for the link. It was quite informative!

The funniest thing happened. I went into the locked Word document the second
time and tried to save some changes. This time I got the message "This is in
"read-only" format. Do you want to save in "read-only" format? I selected
"no," and it restored my file to an editable one.

Thanks for your help!!
