Read-only won't change

No matter what I do all my folders have suddenly become
read-only. I've have changed the attributes, but the
change doesn't take and the folder instantly reverts to
read-only.

As a result I cannot save anything to the computer.

Also, the computer won't save passwords.

What is the problem?

The folders are read only by default. It didn't just happen. And, as you
have found out, you can't change the fact. It is NOT the reason you can not
save anything to the computer. Everyone who is using XP has the same
condition, and we can all save.

Suggest you look elsewhere for the source of your problem.

That conclusion does *not* follow. Read only is an attribute that has
no meaning for folders (the directories are always open for writing),
and XP makes an alternative use of it. You can change it and on Apply
it will ask if you want the change applied to all contained objects, but
the display of it for the folder will revert to greyed

No they haven't. They're not read-only, and they've always been
the way they are now.

When you look at that check box, it can have three settings: on
(black check), off (empty box), and not applicable (gray check).
Folder have that gray check mark. They are not read-only and
there's nothing to fix.

If it's true that you can't save anything, that's certainly not
the reason.

MS KB 326549 says Windows Explorer Properties dialog can't be used to set or view the Read-Only attribute of folders. You have to use the DOS Attrib command or you can add the Attributes column to the explorer window (view > choose details... > attributes)
