Read-Only folders

dAVE

I am having a problem with my computer at home. I use
Olympus Camedia Master to download pictures from my
digital camera to my computer. When I tried to download
pictures, I got a message saying they couldn't be
downloaded to the folder (any folder because I tried a
bunch) because the disk was read-only or full. I then
went to Windows Explorer, right-clicked the folder and
went to properties, and it WAS checked as "Read-Only". I
unchecked it and pressed OK, but when I went back into
properties it was still checked. It will not let me
UNcheck "Read-Only" for ANY folders.

Does anybody have any suggestions? How do I get the
system to uncheck "Read-Only" for my personal folders?

Thanks!

Explorer will not tell you about a folder or let you change it's read only attribute as it has nothing to do with read only.

Where do I go to change the read only attributes? As these
are my personal files, I imagine I should be able to write
to them. How do I change the read only status so I can
download my pictures to the folder?

Thanks

You need to give full details, the exact paths. Most folders ARE NOT read only. That's why I'm giving less than useful info because you ane not.

If your program means what it says it is faulty. Return it. Nothing is stopping it from writing.

It can write to a read only folder, if the folder is read only which only My Pics and similar folders are. Read Only is meaningless when applied to a folder. Read Only only applies to files.

Normally it's a security issue. But you don't give enough info to make a judgement.

If you program is faulty I can fix it. But the number of faulty programs is very small and are usually very old..

First, you may need to be signed in as an administrative
ID to see or control any of this, though I would expect
that your personal files in Documents and Settings ought
to be available. But then Microsoft wants to take good
care of you and make sure you don't poke your eye out
with the big bad computer, so maybe not.

Anyway, if your own ID does not let you do the following,
try signing in as Administrator.

In Windows Explorer, highlight the files you want to
modify. Either select File - Properties from the menu, or
right click on the highlighted file and select properties
from the popup. At the bottom of the General page, you
will see a section headed "Attributes" and two check box
items, ReadOnly and Hidden. Click to remove the selection
(box will appear to be filled in if the item is set to
read only, you want to clear the box) and click Apply. If
the item is a folder, you will be asked if you want to
reset this attribute for just the folder or for the
folder and all its contents. Choose whichever seems right.

BTW, you most certainly can see and modify information
about attributes (such as Read only) in Windows Explorer,
though not in Internet Explorer. However, with the
default settings you will not see anything useful - you
have to select View - Details, then View - Choose Details
and check the box next to Attributes.

OK thank you. I'm sorry for giving less than useful
info. I told you what I knew about it. The folder
was "My Pictures", which you just answered for me is read
only, but that is meaningless when applied to a folder.
I'm going to try a few things when I get home and see what
I can do.

Thank you for your help (even with the slightly rude
reply).

Thank you. I tried doing that and that's where I ran into
the problem. When I unchecked "Read-Only", I got the
option and tried both (it's not a particularly big deal).
But with both I ran into the same problem...When I
unchecked read-only, it didn't take effect. In other
words, when I went BACK into the properties to check up,
the box was once again checked. Any ideas why this is
happening?

Thank you very much for your help.

Because the problem is not read only. And My Pics NEEDS to be read only. Seeing as read only is meaningless on a folder and thus unused by the file system (it's in the specification), explorer uses it (as it's free to be used) to let it know to apply localisation, special behaviour, user tracking, etc to a folder in the Shell's Namespace. It remains meaningless in the file system.

There are (I've only seen about 6, all old) programs that their programmers didn't know that and it checks and assumes it can't write. It can if it tried. There is a way to make windows lie about RO to these programs (and they have compat patches applied automatically by windows for most of these.)

Usually this message you see is caused by security, the program tries to write, is not allowed due to security, and guesses the file is read only (where read only means what it says on a file). Most programs ignore security. So they assume when the write fails that you are trying to overwrite a file.

The dialog is not saying it is set but that it is indeterminate. It is tristate. It applies changes to files only so as not to break the shell. Because users like you commonly broke critical windows functions. System means the same when applied to a folder in the shell but system has some meaning in the file system. They are often invisable to programs.

So you contact cannon and ask is their program faulty. If not read only has nothing to do with it. I did hear of one recent program that was faulty. But I can't remember what it was.

If the cannon program is faulty (less than 0.000000001% chance), then I will give lengthly instructions on how to patch it.

By giving full infomation it allow me to work out what security you are running into, as is the case 99.9999% of the time.

I will give you an example. You can help me with this problem. My appliance is flickering. How do I make it stop. I await your answer.

If you think I'm rude understand I'm really tired of arguing about this, but if I don't answer, you get wrong answers like this.

You're wrong.
Type sendto in Start Run, drop attached two files in. Send your folders to it if you want. I'd like to see you show explorer changing it.

And the dialog is NOT checked.

I note that neither of you access the groups correctly. Now I write another essay.

Click this
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windowsxp.general

now go Tools - Options - Security - and clear the check on Prevent attachments being opened.

Ok thanks. I am going to first try reinstalling the
software when I get home. My last computer had Windows XP
as well and I didn't have this trouble, so maybe something
went wrong when the software got installed.

As far as the rude comment, I wasn't under the impression
there was any "arguing" going on. Merely conversation
about the problem and trying to work it out. Furthermore,
I felt I was very polite in my requests and appreciative
of your help.

Thanks.

Well thank you for all your help. At this point I need to
wait until I leave work today so I can try reloading the
software and looking into the security settings on the
computer. If I am not able to figure out the problem and
Olympus still doesn't get back to me, I'll post some
questions tomorrow. Again, I appreciate the help.

Ok. Well I understand that. Just try not to take it out
on me. I try to be polite about it all.
