read only folders

My folders automatically become "read only" and I,
therefore, cannot copy them to my cd-rw. When I change
the attributes of the folder to remove the "read only" and
apply the change, it does not work, and the folder
immediately goes back to "read only".

All folders in XP are read only. Only the attributes of the files within
can be changed. That's said, it's unlikely that is the cause of the
problem. If you are trying to drag and drop folders to a writeable CD or
save directly to CD from an application, this function is not supported
natively with XP's internal CD writing software which is basically a
mastering program.

If the above fits what you are trying to do, you need packet writing
software such as the Direct CD component of Easy CD Creator, www.roxio.com
or the InCD component of Nero, www.nero.com.

If you have one of those installed, you must also have a version compatible
with XP. I'm not familiar with the Nero version numbers but with Easy CD
Creator, you would need Version 5 with a patch from the Roxio site or
Version 6.
