Read-only folders and icon problem

The 'Read-only' Attribute has somehow been applied to all the folders on my
computer, including 'My Documents'. I have tried right-clicking then
clearing the 'Read-only' toggle box and clicking 'apply', and it sometimes
says it is applying attributes, but next time I right-click, it is still
read-only.
At the same time as this started I noticed the text 'Unspecified' at the top
of some folders that I had just created, and folders are losing their icon
arrangements, e.g. My Computer now has no divisions between the Drive icons
and the document icons.
Are these things related, and is there some way that I can make my folders
Writable again and return the icon arrangements to normal?!

READ ONLY is normal for directories (folders), but the files that they
contain can be changed.
