Is there a way to force a document to read only, NOT read only recommended
?? IN WP you just right click document and check, but these options are
grayed out in word ?? any help appreciated

Only by protecting it as a FORM (Tools/Protection). Note that this
protection is more a convenience than true protection (IOW it's easily
circumvented).
