Read Only Attribute

I am running a new Dell computer with the XP (Home)
version of windows. I have loaded several XL and PDF
files onto the hard drive and wanted to maintain back ups
on CD. I stored the base files on CDs. However, when I
tried to store modified versions to the CD, I got an
error stating that I couldn't save to the CD because the
files and folders were "read only". I tried to change
the read only attribute using the properties selection on
both the file and folder names in Explorer. However,
they won't stay changed, ie they revert back to read
only. I checked the files on the hard drive and found
that the same happens there. I can't find anything in my
manual on this. In fact, the manual implies that the
change in properties should work. Anybody know what's
wrong?
