Re-start, Stand By and Hibernate

XPpro/SP2 full update.

3 related problems

1. Re-start
Shuts down OK
Appears to re-start but no video, though most items appear to be opened.
Have to manually shut down computer and re-boot
2. Stand By
Goes into Stand by and closes down
On re-start process starts but no video and process stops dead.
Have to manually shut down and re-boot
3. Hibernate
Goes into Hibernation and closes down
When resuming the normal "resuming windows" completes but no opening and
F8 unavailable and whole computer is dead

I suspect there may be some registry flaws but to trace is beyond my
knowledge.

Please, if possible, help.

If you own a full install of XP, with a setup cd from MS, a Repair setup is
probably the most direct try at a fix. If not, you should probably try
reinstalling the video drivers.

Actually I found the problem was entirely due to a faulty graphics card and
with replacing it with nVidia 8600GT the problem vanished. Simple really but
no-one told me that graphics cards fail!!!!

Just for future reference--*everything* fails, sooner or later
