re-start on ms updates

Some time ago I installed a 160 gb Iomega USB drive and it works quite well.
some time after the installation I downloaded and tried to install a
periodic XP update. While doing this the machine shut down and re-booted on
its own, and doing a lost clusters check, and sometimes finding them! I
finally discovered that if I wanted to download and install any ms updates I
had to disconnect the USB drive. Not that that's so hard to do but WHY?
Anybody else seen this! I am using windows XP SP2 TIA.

My feeling is that you may need to find what is going on in terms of
your
system before directly addressing the problems with updating Windows.

Any Errors / Warnings in the System Log in Event Viewer?

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools,
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&Product=winxp

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event Viewer.
Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the
message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report
complete with links into the message. Make sure this is the first paste
after exiting from Event Viewer.

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties. Hardware,
Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code?

Hope this helps.
