So, this program is like a blank tablet into which you must know the programs,
version, etc. info about them,
then put it into this program and THEN you can view it? It doesn't automatically
catalog and extract ALL
that info? Sheesh! I may as well construct a spread sheet and save it. I can sort
it IAW any field entered.
So this program is useless unless and until YOU gather by hand and enter all this info
about your OS, programs,
data? If that's all it does, I'm disappointed. Any info would be helpful as I just
downloaded and am looking
at the program. Am I missing something, or is this all it does? TIA

It's actually a very good program. But you are right. It doesn't
auto-catalog (I think the pro version does). And adding programs one at a
time can be painstaking, especially if you have lots of freeware. For that
reason, I haven't added everything I have on my machine. But it does
organize things well and keeps a lot of information on each title. I can see
the free version being more than some people will want to keep up with.

You got it. :)

You could, but it might not look as nice, and some of the work has
been done for you by SoftCAT.

Yep, but it's worth it in the end. You should see what a completed
SoftCAT database looks like. And it's handy when you want to update
your programs, since the homepages are all listed in it.

It looks like only the pay version can automatically catalog the
software you have on your drive:

<edited quotes from the page>
SoftCAT Plus has these additional features:
<snip additional features>
* Auto catalog function: Will search your computer for installed
programs and auto-catalog these programs (title, version, publisher,
icon, installation folder, installation date and program file).
<snip additional features>

But you can do a find for all exe programs and then drag and drop them
onto softcat.

Yes, thanks Daphne! I can see now that this is a long and continuous
project,
but that info and capability certainly helps. I thought one could
create the DB then
drag and drop...;( not so! But I just downloaded it last evening so
I've no idea what
else it can do. Thanks again.

With the pro version if a directory has eg. five .exe files it only
catalogues one of them. A pretty useless "auto-catalogue"
situation IMO. Pretty misleading advertising.

You still have to fill in stuff but it is a great program. Especially if
you like to try out all kinds of software and then later can't remember
if you've already tried it.
