Re-order NIC hardware

Where is the registry key location that sets the order of recognition of
multiple NIC hardware? I have a software license that is keyed to the MAC
address on a NIC. The license software checks the MAC address to valadate but
is reads the first one in the list in the registry. My licensed NIC is an add
on a PCI card and it is reading second behind the one embedded on the MB.

I dont know the answer, but perhaps the software Company will, eg I have two
NIC's on my mobo

I don't know the registry settings but i'm pretty sure you can do it
this way....
Control Panel/Network connections/advanced (menu item)/advanced
settings (sub menu item)
There you can move the connection's priority up or down, which, *i
think* is what you're asking for (unless i miss-read the post)

I'm not exactly sure of where the reg key is but my suggestion is
first a question
do you actually need both if not
then when the machine is booting get into the BIOS and disable the
on-board embedded one and then only the PCI card one will be available

The software company referred me to Microsoft OS support, since this is an OS
function issue. I can get it to work if I un-install the onboard NIC but it
just re-installs on reboot so I have to do it every time. I have not been
able to find a line item in the BIOS to disable onboard NIC. Changing the
order in the registry is the answer but finding the location is not easy.

You can't really change the NIC order as such in the registry, the
registry keys are organized in an alphabetical order. To do what you
want you will have to attempt to rename the key(s) for the onboard NIC.
The key will be found in the following branches:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NWLinkIPX\NetConf
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\<Directory Specifying Manufacturer>
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\NetworkCards\<number>

Surely there must be a way to disable the onboard NIC, did you check
with your PC vendor?

You can disable a NIC in Hardware devices, as to whether this is
sufficient............?
Sounds like an Software Company 'getout' ie they failed to take into account
a sys may have several NIC's
It is not a function of MS or the o/s, its down to badly implemented
protection from this vendor
