Can't delete reference to physcially removed NIC

I had a Netgear network card fail and I replaced it with a Linksys card. I
didn't remove the old NIC from the Device Manager before replacing the card
and I "may" have installed the new NIC in a different PCI slot. Now when I
go into the Device Manager, both NIC's appear with a red X on the Netgear
card.

When I attempt to uninstall the Netgear NIC I receive a "Failed to
uninstall.....The device may be required to boot up...." A search of the
registry shows the card referenced several places but it is hard to determine
what is safe to delete here.

Any suggestions on how to get rid of the reference to the Netgear card?

Hi Bob,

Uninstall the netgear supporting software first. If it still resists
removal, restart in Safe mode and remove it there.

Does the old card prevent the system from booting?

If it does not, put it back and go through the Device Manager
removal process.

Tried renaming the driver file and tried a Safe mode uninstall without
success. The old Netgear card went out in the trash so I can't back into the
problem that way.

For what it's worth, when I tried to uninstall the NIC in Safe mode, it
appeard twice in the Device Manager with one copy being identified as #2.
The funny thing about thedrivers for this card is that it is identified as a
"Packet Scheduler Miniport" and uses "psched.sys" as the driver. Of course
the Linksys card also appeared twice; once as a normal NIC and once as a
Packet Scheduler Miniport.

Any further suggestions?

Hi,

Might want to look under this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\PCI

Export a copy of any key before removing it.

Rick,

Located the referenced key and tried to delete the subkey with the Netgear
information without sucess. Rebooted into safe mode w/o network support and
tried again but no luck. I also noted that I have a "CurrentControlSet01"
and another "CurrentControlSet03" that contain the same subkeys with Netgear
information. I tried deleting them also w/o any luck.

Hi,

You deleted it and it came back? Or you weren't allowed to delete it?
