and this will do what? i found out the problem. I let an
idiot friend of mine install all of my software, including
xp home, but he used a crack to try to disable the
activation, which is apparently why when i activate using
my valid code, microsoft is telling me that ive already
activated, but the computer keeps resetting itself
everytime it restarts to think that it hasn't activated.
ive only got a day and a half left to activate. what
happens when it locks me out? what do i do then, if i
can't fix it before then?

Well, once you've finished giving your "idiot friend" a good old slap about
the head with a wet kipper, you're probably going to have to do a repair
installation. This is a non-destructive process though it IS advisable to
backup important data beforehand.

Boot from your XP disc and proceed as if you were installing it fresh, it
will then detect the existing installation of Windows and ask if you want to
repair it, choose YES and it will reinstall Windows over the top (leaving
existing programs alone) and then allow you to enter your product key.

Once you've reinstalled, you might still have to activate by phone, if so,
it's a free call so just tell them that you had to reinstall it on the same
computer and they'll give you a new activation code... just don't mention
what your friend did!

Rick's advice would normally correct an occaisional bug with the activation
system IIRC, but as your friend used a crack, it probably won't work.

Hopefully this will fix your problem for you and don't let your friend on
your PC again! :)

Do two further things - first move the two files that hold activation
info to some place else; they are windows\system32\wpa.dbl and wpa.bak

Then run regedit.exe, open to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT
\CurrentVersion\WPAEvents
and in the right pane double click OOBETimer and *change* the first byte
to 00

With those two dlls re-registered this should allow you to run
Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Activate Windows

Start on Activate by phone - this gives an opportunity to change the
Product key; use it to ensure that the one in use is the correct one and
not some bastardised one supplied by your *friend*. Then cancel before
the actual call, reboot and you should be able to run the wizard again
and activate on the net

If that does not do it, you may have to do a complete format and
re-install - and charge your *friend* for the cost of the disruption
