May computer would not boot up, got an error message that a file was missing
or corrupt. Is re installing XP my only option? Also will ALL files be lost?
Can they be recovered somehow?

What was the error message and what version of Windows XP are you using? All
information helps to get an informative reply.

Hi Mike,

What is the name of the file that was reported as missing or corrupt?

Regards,

Hopefully you have a "regular" install CD (or have access to one) and not a
Recovery or Restore CD or partition provided by the computer manufacturer.
Follow the instructions in this MSKB article:

"Invalid Boot.ini" or "Windows could not start" error messages when you
start your computer

What was the *exact* text of the error message? Otherwise, we'll just
be guessing at the problem.
