Re-installing XP

Because Win XP Pro was running slowly on my desktop, I re-installed XP. XP
came with my Dell PC so I used the Dell Reinstallation CD for XP Pro with Svc
Pack 1a. I followed these steps:

1. I did the reinstall, not the repair option.
2. I installed the modem software and dial-up networking. Dial-up
networking did not work with the internet firewall installed so I unselected
it.
3. In the Start Menu, I clicked Windows Update to get Svc Pack 2. Updates
were downloaded and installed but when I go to Control Panel and click
System, I still see Win XP Svc Pack 1.
While downloading updates, two warning messages appeared. One described a
registry issue and directed me to http://FixReg32.com. Another message
directed me to www.updatepatch.info. Since I don't know if these sites are
legitimate, I ignored both warning messages.
4. I installed my virus protection package.

Win XP now runs fast but I have several issues:

1. Dial-up networking is inconsistent. I frequently get the message that
my user id and password are incorrect. I have a 2nd PC with Win XP, however,
and dial-up networking, with the same settings, works fine there. I delete
dial-up networking and reinstall it. Sometimes that works, sometimes it
doesn't work.
2. Control Panel | System still displays Win XP with SP 1. I would like to
install SP 2 but the Windows Update web site has apparently not installed it.
3. Should I get downloads from http://FixReg32.com and www.updatepatch.info
as the messages suggested?

Thanks.

A. No!

Apparently, you have some malicious spyware installed.
Perform the following maintenance, then download SP2

Thanks Carey. The steps that you suggested seem to be working.

I note that in setting Automatic Windows XP Updates, the default install
time is 3 am daily. Since I turn off my PC at night, should I reset this to
6 pm, for example.

When I open Internet Explorer, the dial-up networking dialog box opens
first, then the IE window opens on top of the dial-up box. In the past, the
dial-up box appeared on top so I could easily click OK. Can I change a
setting so the dial-up box opens on top?
