Re-installing Wordpad

R

Rhino

I inadvertently deleted Wordpad the other day when trying to free up some
space on my C: drive - it was complaining that less than 200 MB were
available - and now I'd like to re-install Wordpad. I now have lots of
freespace on that drive. How do I re-install Wordpad?

I tried finding the answer in the Help and Support Center and found an
article that said to do this:

1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs, click the Windows Setup tab, and
then double-click Accessories.
3. Click to select the WordPad check box, and then click OK.
4. Click Apply, insert your Windows CD-ROM if you are prompted, and
then click OK.
5. Click OK, and then close Control Panel.

Unfortunately, this doesn't work for me. In point 2, Add/Remove Programs
doesn't have a "Windows Setup" tab - or any other tab for that matter. (I
write GUIs in Java sometimes so I know what a tab looks like.)

There is an "Add/Remove Windows Components" icon to the left of the list of
currently installed programs so that seemed like it might be the right thing
to do. However, when I launched that, I got a longish list of Windows
Components and the option to add or remove any or all of them. The first
category was "Accessories and Utilities" but when I clicked on the "Details"
button, neither subcomponent ("Accessories" nor "Games") contained Wordpad
so there didn't seem much point in installing anything under "Accessories
and Utilities".

I can't find Wordpad listed under any of the other components either so I
suspect the whole approach of adding/removing components was a wrong turn.

I also tried clicking the 'Add New Programs' icon. Am I right in assuming
that I need to use the 'Add a program from CD-ROM or floppy disk' option and
then give it my Windows CD? If not, what do I need to do to get Wordpad
re-installed??

I am running XP Professional SP1(!!).

Chances are WordPad is still installed on your system.
Try the following:

1. Right-click on your Desktop and select: NEW > SHORTCUT
2. In the Create Shortcut window, type in: WORDPAD.EXE , and click "Next"
3. In the next window, type in: WordPad , and click "Finish"
4. A new WordPad shortcut icon should appear on your Desktop.

Sorry, no dice.

In Step 2, when I click "Next", it tells me that "The file WORDPAD.EXE
cannot be found."

Now what?

Rhino,

First try to see if it is still on your computer by clicking start then run
then typing wordpad.exe if it opens up then wordpad is still installed onto
your computer. I have XP Pro and wordpad is loaded at C:\Program
Files\Windows NT\Accessories\wordpad.exe which is what you would have to
type in at step 2 instead of just wordpad.exe. Good luck.

Perform an advanced search for " wordpad.inf ", then right-click
on this file and select "install".

Make sure your C: drive has at least 10 megs free at all times.

Ok, that seems more realistic!

Which may even be too small. It doesn't take too long for Internet cache
to add up. Then think about the space you may need for installing apps
down the line.
