Re-installing Windows XP

I'm trying to re-install Windows XP on an old PC which was having trouble,
but I lost the original "restore" disk my manufacturer (Toshiba) gave me with
my computer. My brother lent me his copy of Windows XP Pro and I am trying to
install it using the Product Key on the bottom of my laptop, but the code on
my laptop doesn't work with his Windows CD. My computer came with Windows XP
sans SP2 and his CD has SP2 on it; does this make a difference? Why won't my
pre-SP2 Product KEy work with his SP2 copy of Windows?

You'll have to contact Toshiba support and order
a new Toshiba Restore CD. The Product Key affixed
to your Toshiba PC is only valid when using the
genuine Toshiba Restore CD.

Visit the Toshiba Support web site and click on
"Search with Ask Iris".

Unfortunately, obtaining older "restore" CD's from an OEM may be a bit of a
problem. That aside, the drivers are usually still available, and can be
used with retail versions of XP, IF they are XP compatable. (Another
possible problem)
Moral. Buy a Laptop with the version of windows you intend to use on that
laptop, and expect to likely replace the laptop if a major software upgrade
is really necessary. (I don't like laptops!) They fill specific needs for
a price at least twice that of desktops.
