re installing windows xp pro.

I am trying to re install windows on my dell laptop and i am having trouble
doing it. I follow the steps to reinstall it and i still have files on my
computer that are the reason for doin this in the first place. Please help me
out and tell me what I am doing wrong.

Paul,
make a startup disk, and boot your computer from the disk. format you drive
and then reinstall it. what files are causing you to do this?

Follow this for a Clean Installation:

Be sure to delete the partition.

If you are using an OEM recovery CD, be sure not to choose the option
similar to "Non Destructive Recovery"
That option will keep older files.

Of course these options destroy ALL data so all important data should be
backed up first.

You do not need to make a startup disk. You do not need to separately
format your hard drive. Follow the instructions given you at the link
by Jupiter Jones or here:

Another really good idea would be to read the Dell manual that came with
your laptop. Reinstalling will be covered in it.

Simply boot from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be offered the
opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of the
installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of boot
devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)
