Re-installing USB ports?

After unwisely disconnecting an externally-powered MP3 player while it was
still connected to my computer's USB port, none of the four USB ports will
now accept any of my usual connections (mouse, printer, etc). Even things
that weren't connected at the time. They all come up as unknown devices.
The USB universal host controllers and root hubs say they are working
properly, but clearly they are not. I notice these have an uninstall option,
but if I do that, how can I re-install them?
And any other ideas?

FWIW I had a similar problem. I went into the Device Manager and deleted the
USB section. Then after rebooting, the computer detected all USB devices and
everything works fine on the USB side now.
Might sort your problem out.
