re-installation over damaged XP Pro. Do I have to loose my apps?

I'm trying to recover from some bizarre problem where my
video card driver corrupts system files on shutdown. I
just want to install XP back over its self but not loose
my registry entries, Documents and applications. With
Windows 2000 this wasn't too hard, but XP seems to have a
scorched earth policy. Any ideas?
