Installation of Windows XP Pro over Windows 98 SE

Is it possible (and reasonable) to Install Windows XP over
Windows 98 SE with out loosing all the running programs?
I tried to upgrade one 98 machine and end up doing a
comeplete install of XP Pro and having to reinstall all
the applications.
Would like to advoid the same hassel if possible
 
Definitely do a clean install. I loaded over 98SE and kept crashing and finally did a clean and am fine. Save yourself the aggravation and do the clean install now. You'll have to do it eventually anyway. The code is just too different from 98
