Re-install XP pro from version prior to sp2

Group,

Please forgive any really basic questions here ... I spend the vast
majority of my computing time on Unix machines, turning to windows for
my graphics/video editing due to superior tools.

I want to bring a failed machine back online:

How can I best reinstall from my XP Pro disk that was bought before
sp2 was out?

Can I combine my existing Install disk with a download of sp2 and
build my own DVD that has the updated version?

Alternatively
If I reinstall as is and then go to MS update pages will they
recognize my version and update me accordingsly still.

Will that route require some horribly high number of visits and
reboots but finally result in an uptodate install?

One final possible complication. The machine my Install disk was
originally installed on had a meltdown and now has a new mobo.
I first installed a linux version for a few mnths but now need to get
winxp running for a backup of my graphics machine.

Should I expect any problems there? The Install disk is standalone,
not an OEM version.

You can, not recommended.

Yes, windows update will require SEVERAL restarts and eventually get you
to the same point as if you had installed XP w/ SP2. Once all the
updates are done, you are at the same point. One saves you about (max)
266MB download. It's advised to DL and install the SP before any other
update if you DO decide to install the version before SP2

You said "the install disk is standalone, not an OEM version" -- I
assume you mean "retail" -- where you bought the product off the store
shelf some time ago.

In Linux, you can use some tools (maybe wine, maybe qemu) to gather a
slipstreamed disk. There's another link (not checked) in the replies
that mentions slipstreaming -- try it.

it basically encompasses copying ALL data from the CD (although only the
i386 folder, and the win51* files at the root of the CD) to hard disk
(so you can make changes), starting the FULL SP2 package (of about 266MB
in size) with an integrate switch, pointing the SP2 package to the root
of the copied contents from the CD. the package does it's work, then
you burn the contents back to CD (getting some tool like Bart's bbie
(search google for bbie) to get a bootable bootblock for your CD).

I've done it repeatedly. Works well, no problems.

you might want to read www.tech-hints.com for the way I did it -- I
followed their instructions and worked beautifully.

Good luck!...
