Re-install of Windows XP (pre SP1 and SP2)

I have an older computer that has WinXP Home with SP1 and SP2 installed.
This PC has maxed out and I have gotten a new PC for myself and plan to give
the older one to my kids. Because it has gotten so sluggish, I figured I
would do a clean install of WinXP and install only a few programs for my
kids. However, I can't seem to do the OS reinstall because the WinXP install
routine recognizes SP2 and says that WinXP can't be installed because a newer
version (SP2) is on the machine. What can I do?

Thanks!

Hi,

Run setup, delete the existing system partition, then create a new one,
format, and do a clean installation.

Put the Windows cd in the cd drive and restart *note:if the computer doesn't
boot from the cd, check your bios or the manual for your motherboard to
change the boot order to the cdrom

You could do a clean install of the Operating system with the original CD that must have come with the PC. Before you do this, make sure you have the serial number which is ALWAYS required. Also, if you have Office Applications, make sure you have the serial numbers.

To get serial numbers, you will need to use the tool provided by our resident Senior Pirate (Micky Mouse Stevens). So you will need to search the internet for ViewKey and see wha you can get. MagicalJelly is the one recommended by Micky Mouse Stevens which requires no installation.

SP2 can't block reinstallation of OS unless you are using non-generic restore CD provided by your PC supplier in which case no one can help except your pc maker if he/she is still alive or still in business. Some of them are in prison for terrorism!

Hope thi helps.

I use non Microsoft products wherever possible which requires no activation.

I use Netscape 7.2 as my default browser which has everything I need for my work.

What about going into Control Panel and into Add/Remove and removing the SP2
and SP1 installations. I was having problems with SP1a that I had just
recently installed and did as I have suggested. It worked just fine for me.
Of course all this is based on the premise that you saved the updated files
when asked at the beginning of the SP1 and SP2 upgrades.

Good Luck,
