Check your Regional Options to make sure that the keyboard layout is
what you expect it to be. Typical instructions here:

have checked all my regional setting and all seem fine, I am based in uk and
my settings reflect that

What do you get when you press that key ?

Might Alt+Gr have something to do with this back slash problem?

I'm not sure exactly, it's more of a hunch than concrete advice. In
Europe Alt Gr keyboards are very common, they allow printing of special
characters. I'm just wondering if by any chance you might not have
pressed a key combination and locked the keyboard in a different
(Atl+Gr) layout or enabled the special keys, that may have changed the
character map of the Back Slash key.

I had this problem after I connected a PS2 keyboard using a USB converter.
Replaced with a USB keyboard and was back to normal.
