RC1 install stability problems

hi
just tried to install RC1 and i experienced the same random crashes as i did
when installing Beta2, which only installed properly after about 10
attempts. i have no stability problems with XP on the same system.

with RC1 my install usually crashes in the expanding files stage, sometimes
even before the first reboot, while i'm in XP doing a clean install onto a
new partition.

also tried to upgrade the Beta2 installation but it also crashed during the
upgrade, and then the rollback also crashed!
my system is a Shuttle ST61G4, SATA drive, using the SI3512 controller. P4
3.0 Ghz, 1 Gb DDR, ATI X1600 Pro. my motherboard is ATI-based but i don't
suppose the new RC1 ati catalyst drivers are any use before the setup?

has anyone got suggestions to improve the stability of the setup? it seems
very hit and miss because it crashes at a different stage each time,
although it never reached 'expanding files'. after the crash, it always
forces a rollback.

thanks
tim

Do you have the correct drivers installed for the SATA controller?

Actually don't bother with the ati catalyst drivers. The ones posted on
ATI's website are actually older then what is shipped with the Vista builds.

hi B,
thanks for the post.
the drivers i'm using are identifed by Vista Setup as compatible in the
'Load Drivers' stage, they are from the Silicon Image web site, although SI
do not have Vista specific drivers available, neither to shuttle
(mainboard).

it got to 90% expanding files today in another attempt, and then froze (i
left it for 6 hours just to be sure). is there a way to resume the install
without going into a rollback? or better still, i would prefer to expand
all the files while still in XP but this doesn't seem to be an option, i
looked in the command line switches for setup. i am installing from hard
disk.

i may end up getting an IDE drive and installing it there, but that would be
admitting defeat so i'm still hoping for another route. thanks again

I had same problems in 5536 and had to install a fresh XP install and upgrade
from there. MAybe better for you to do the same, its a hassle n but it works.
Using RC1 i could do a install to a bare drive.

hi,
thanks a lot for the suggestion, i hadn't thought of that. i'm a little
skeptical thought because i tried to upgrade Beta2 to RC1 and it froze
during setup after the first re-boot. is there any reason why an upgrade
from XP would be any more likely to succeed? i had been running Beta2 quite
happily for 2 months without any driver trouble once i got past the beta2
setup.

thanks

i got it working. boot + install from DVD worked fine with the same SATA
driver as i used in Beta2. nice!
thanks for the help.

hi, sorry i wasn't more clear!
with my previous attempts, i had downloaded and extracted the ISO image onto
my hard drive and was trying to do a clean Vista install onto a second
partition, while booted into my primary XP partition. i also tried
upgrading from Beta2 but that didn't work, it froze some time into the
install after the first reboot.

what solved it was burning the ISO to a DVD and booting directly from that,
then choosing the secondary partition, Load Driver, and off we go. i still
had to disable the USB controller in the BIOS to prevent random freezes
during the install, but i found that out with Beta2 so i was expecting that.
now that i have it up and running, i have re-enabled the USB Controller and
it's all working nicely, except i still have no glass with my ATI X1600 Pro
card, device reports code 43 :(

thanks
tim
