RAS - do I really need 2 NICs ?

Hi all

I am about to set up RAS on a Windows 2000 Server to allow users to VPN into
the LAN.

I have done this before, but those servers all had 2 NICs. A Microsoft
article states that 2 NICs are required, but this server only has 1 NIC.
This single NIC is used for LAN and internet traffic to/from the server
(there is a firewall & router connected to this single segment LAN).

Will I be able to configure a RAS VPN server using this Server's single NIC
configuration ? - and is there anything that I might need to be aware of ?

Thanks in advance.

No you don't need two NIC's, but you have to use the Custom
Configuration Options to make it work.

You do not need 2 NICs to configure a Windows 2000 Server as a VPN server.
This is a common configuration and there is no reason to expect problems.
However, if the server is also a domain controller, you are likely to have
DNS issues - See:

Also, make sure that Remote access connections are not listed at the top of
the binding order in My Network Places/Properties/Advanced/Advanced
Settings.

Thanks Doug

I think your advice will have saved me lots of grief !

I feel reassured that I can now go ahead and set up the VPN RAS server.
