Random start-up problems

Hi,
I need some help with a start-up problem for Vista Ultimate 32bit. Randomly
it fails to complete the start-up -- after the very initial stuff of checking
for drives and so on there is a brief period of black screen and then the
word Microsoft with a little box underneath it which should have a moving
green bar and it. Well the word and the box appear very faintly and then
everything just stops. If I use the power button to shut down and then
restart I get the window warning me that Windows did not load properly and to
insert the DVD and restart. Well if I do that the DVD is ignored and usually
my PC will bootup normally the next time but sometimes I have to go through
this rigmarole may be three or four times before I can get my PC to bootup
properly. Once booted up it seems to run fine.
But I am bugged that there is something wrong and that I am running near to
a major disaster.
Any ideas?

Sorry if my post wasn't clear. The Windows DVD is not picked up on bootup --
and yes BIOS is set to boot from the DVD drive. Any ideas?

Hopefully

Have you tried a startup repair by booting from the Vista DVD?
