Ram Question Please help

Is there a difference between DDR Ram or SD RAM??
I need to get some new ram for my computer but i dont
know which one i need. Does it matter if i have either
one of them?

I dont know which one to get Pleas help?

yes, it matters. Single Data Rate Ram and Double Data Rate ram are totally
different. Late model SDR is 168 pin and DDR is 184 pin. They do not fit
the same slots and wouldn't work with your other board stuff anyway. Go to
your machines website and type in your model and they should be able to tell
you what you have. Or, just open the case and pull it out. Make sure you
have grounded yourself first so as not to fry components with static
electricity.

Short answer: yes. You cannot get one if the motherboard uses the other.

That, however, is not the only difference. SD RAM is also broken up into
different categories (such as PC100 and PC133). If your motherboard
takes PC133, you cannot install PC100. In this case, however, the
reverse (PC133 RAM on a PC100 board) is possible, because PC133 can
"dummy" itself down.

IF you haven't gotten rid of the old RAM yet, take it into a computer
store and have a tech tell you what kind of RAM you need.

Otherwise, if you can figure out exactly what motherboard you have, you
can look it up and find out that way, but using the original RAM is the
easiest way.

Newer systems built for performance use DDR RAM. SD RAM is a cheaper
alternative, running at lower clock speeds. The newer mobos are optimized
for DDR 266 and above, upto 400Mhz.

DDR is double density ram and It runs 2x faster than normal ram
for stuff like this you need to find out what ram your motherboard supports so find out what make and model your motherboard is and take it somewhere for upgradin

The other replies explain the difference, to find out what kind you need,
download the free system information utility Aida32.
Look in Computer> DMI after running the install and opening the utility.

They are very different technologies: A given motherboard will use one
or the other and they do not mix.

get the free Aida 32, enterprise edition from

which is an excellent general System Info tool, and its Motherboard -
Chipset section will tell you which is used in the Memory slots section
(in ( ) on the right of each line)
