I have 512Mb of PC133 RAM (2 x 256). I suspect that one of the chips is not
working correctly since my BIOS sometimes reports that I have 256Mb and
Windows reports likewise sometimes.

Is there any way of checking a memory chip without buying a new one and
swapping-out each chip?

Cheers.

Unless you have a hardware RAM tester, substitution is the best trouble
shooting method. All/most technicians use this method. One of the reasons I
have about 35-40 extra RAM sticks of different ratings and sizes lying
around.

If you are experiencing that effect I think it is much more likely a
badly seated RAM module - they are not the easiest things in the world
to get correctly bedded in their sockets.
