RAID ARRAYS

I want to create a RAID array with a 200gig hard disk I am
already using and another 200gig hard disk.

Do I first have to back up my data - will the setting up of
the array effectively wipe the first hard disk clean?

It depends on what kind of software / hardware you are using for the RAID.

For instance, using the raid controller built into my motherboard here,
and the supplied 'Intel Application Accelerator RAID edition' software,
I can create a RAID volume using an existing hard disk. Add the second
disk and run the data migration feature.
