Raedon 9200 Slow Screen Redraw in Windows XP

I just upgraded from ME to XP and am getting some slow screen redraws. In
particular when I open IE the window draws slowly at the top and you can see
the background behind the window for about a second until the window draws
completely. This happens on some other windows as well. Also, sometimes
this happends in opening a minimized program to full screen.

I have an Athon 900, 40 gig hd, Raedon 9200 AGP 128MB video and 384 system
RAM. I am also using the newest Catalyst software and driver I downloaded
from their website. I has planned on buying another 256MB system RAM
already, but I'm not sure if that will help with the video problem.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thank you.

If you literally used an Upgrade edition of XP to change your loaded ME OS,
then that is most likely the problem.. ME is notorious for not performing a
useable upgrade to XP when using an XP Upgrade CD. You literally have to
reformat the hardrive and do a fresh install of XP in order to solve your
problem.

Thanks for you response. I did a clean install to Windows XP and
reformatted my harddrive to NTFS.

I don't think the latest drivers support your card. If you have the
latest/last drivers for your card, run DXDiag and check for errors.

The drivers were listed as the XP drivers for the 9200 on the ATI/AMD
website. I ran DXDIAG everything was recognized and there were no errors.

(1) Go to Start -> Run and type "services.msc" to see the list of startup
services. Ensure "ATi Smart" is set to automatic and is currently running.
From past experience ATi Smart seems to be required to get basic Windows GDI
acceleration.

(2) Athlon 900 and 384 MB are cutting it close for XP. Try running with the
"Classic" theme, without the fruity-looking windows and icons.

I would say that its the memory that is not helping, I have a 9250 with a
XP 2600+ and with 2GB memory and see no problems the few times I used XP,
but I use win2000 for everyday use as its a better OS.

I also am having a problem with slow screen redraws. I previously had
a 9600 AIW AGP card but have since "upgraded" to a Radeon X1300. In my
newer XP partition (I dual boot) the screen redraw rate seems to slow
down after a while; in fact, I soon have to hit the "F5" button to see
the changes in Windows Explorer. This didn't happen with my AIW card.
I have 1GB of system ram, and a AMD 64 3500+ processor.
I tried the suggestions below, of trying to set ATI Smart in Services,
but the setting always goes back to OFF, with the message "The ATI
Smart service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some
services stop automatically if they have no work to do, for example,
the Performance logs and Alert Service"
Is there a way to make this service stay "ON" since this might help my
redraw problem?
