Radeon 9800XT DVI

I have the above card and it has a DVI port on it.
I have just bought a new monitor (22" LDC) with has DVI input but I
can't get a digital signal to come through, even though I have
connected up the dvi cable..

I can't seem to find an option on Cat properties to enable DVI or is
it already enabled?

It works fine with Analogue though...

Any ideas?

OK now I have a new problem!

After installing the driver for the monitor and then reset the PC it
is now really messed up...

I have set windows to the native resolution of 1680x1050 which worked
perfect before installing the driver but now the desktop goes off the
monitor and I have to move the mouse to scroll around it..

When I look at the settings on the actual monitor itself it says the
resolution is at 1280 x 1024 even though windows has it as 1680 x
1050!

What on Earth is going on here?

This is a feature of some drivers where you can have a desktop bigger than
the displayed on your monitor.

If you go you Desktop Properties Settings Advanced you'll probably find you
can configure it so that the desktop and display are the same size.

Holy Sh*t!!...you have no idea what I went through to get it to work
again an dI still don't know what I did....ended up doing another
system restore and reinstalling the monitor driver again....let's hope
it stays this way after a reboot!...

Anyway...back to my original question...

My 9800XT has a dvi output and my Samsung 226BW has a dvi input...but
I get no signal...I have now read that there are two types...dvi-d and
dvi-a?...I can't seem to find the answer in google...Is this likely to
be my problem?

Cheers again....

My 9800-Pro card is connected to my Samsung LCD monitor using the
DVI-I connector and works fine. I'd guess your 9800XT is similar.

The 9800-Pro user manual says this:
"To connect a flat panel directly to your card, use the DVI-I
connector. To connect a VGA monitor to the DVI-I connector,
plug the supplied DVI-I-to-VGA adapter into the DVI-I connector,
then plug your monitor cable into the adapter, as shown below."

You need to check which DVI connection your Samsung needs and
make sure you are using the right connector to the graphics card.

My 9800XT is DVD-I and the monitor is DVD-D....is this supposed to
work with the dvi cable supplied with the 9800XT? It all fits in the
sockets but no signal...

Info here about DVI connectors: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVI
(scroll down to 'connectors' on that page where it says):

"It is possible however, to connect a male DVI-D cable to a female
DVI-I connector"

I believe that is what you have ...and they should therefore connect
and work OK.

....more here... http://www.ramelectronics.net/html/DVI_info.html

Bottom line is that you should be able to connect a DVI-D monitor
to a DVI-I graphics card like the 9800XT. Have you installed the
driver(s) for your Samsung monitor?

Yes a DVI-I connector on a video card simply means that both the analogue
(DVI-A) and digital (DVI-D) signals are present.

If you connect the DVI-I on the video card to the DVI-D on the monitor with
a DVI-D compatible cable it should work.

It isn't working...the cables says "DVI Digital" so I assume that is
DVI - D...i was hoping that I just had to tick a checkbox on the
control panel for my 9800XT to activate digital-out but I can't find a
setting....

Hmmmm....Yes I do have the digital driver installed for my monitor but
to be honest the monitor acts the same nomatter what driver I chuck at
Windows!

Probably not what you want to hear, but I had a 9800XT hooked to my
SyncMaster 226bw via DVI and it worked fine. It was just plug and play.
Never had any issues.

I just found this on the ATi website, so for now I will sit tight and
not worry too much that something is broken....

That looks like the problem. When was that article dated?

As you can see some other folks incl myself have not had a problem
so it looks like an incompatibility between the ATI card and some
TFT monitors.

The bad thing is the atricle was dated in June so now I don't hold
much hope...Esp if someone was supposed to be working on a fix...

Maybe it depends on who made your ati...

Does that video card and monitor have both analog and digital connections??
Try hooking both up at the same time..........then under the ATI control
center see which one is set to primary display...chances are its the Analog.
Switch them around so that the Digital is Primary and analog is
secondary...then restart.

Once upon a time with a 9500 Pro I needed to do this for the same problem.

Maybe you can e-mail ATI support -or- change the TFT monitor
where you bought it -or- maybe try a different graphics card...?

My own 9800-Pro card was made by Sapphire.
Works like a dream apart from a shortage of on-board VRAM :-(

This is a very good point..

I have tried switching them around but Icannot install the digital
driver onto "secondary" because the properties box for the monitor is
greyed out....also I can't select the "secondary" from the monitor
driver installation CD...Hmmm..I think you may be onto something here
though.....

It seems that I can't install the driver on the monitor because the PC
thinks it is not connected to secondary port (although it is) but as
far as I know the pc won't detect the dvi cable unless the driver is
installed...it's a catch 22....

Or maybe this isn't how it works...(it's plu n play after all)...

So how do I install the monitor driver onto "secondary"?
