Radeon 9800 pro serious problem since Catalyst 5.6

I have a ATI Radeon 9800 Pro and I have just changed to Catalyst 5.6 and now
have frequent screen corruption either at startup or at seemingly random
times. This screen corruption makes it unreadable and occurs on either of
my connected monitors (19" crt RGB and 17" TFT DVI)

If I can manage to get access to CCC then I change the scan frequency of the
offending display to any other value it can handle then the corruption
immediately disappears. I can then return it e.g. to 100Hz for the CRT and
75Hz for the TFT. I have of course checked that I am using the latest ATI
drivers.

This is a real pain. Has anyone seen this problem?

Is 75 Hz the native resolution of the TFT display? There are a couple of
checkboxes for using an alternate DVI mode and reduced blanking. Tried them?

My crt is the primary and tft secondary. The problem can occur on either
display although currently affecting the crt primary. I have uninstalled
5.6 and reinstalled and also carried out a "repair" but the problem came
back after a minute. I changed the frequency of the crt and it is now
running. I also have a problem in that direct3d is not working on my XP Sp2
and even downloading and reinstalling directx 9 does not make it work.
Perhaps the two problems are related. Anyone know if there are also website
forums for Radion cards?

Update: I installed a fresh version of XP prof sp2 in another drive (D:)
On booting to this dxdiag shows no problems and direct3d is working just
fine. Now on the D drive I do not have the version 5.6 catalyst so this
re-enforces my belief that there is a problem with 5.6 and the 9800 Pro.
Can anyone help as I do not want to reinstall XP and 200GB of programs/data
on the C: drive.

Yes 75Hz is native.

One thing to try: Display Properties -> Settings -> Advanced -> Displays
tab -> click on your primary monitor -> Advanced tab

Try the various Horiztontal, Vertical, or Composite synchronization methods.

If that doesn't work, use the ATi uninstall utility that comes with every
driver package, it is in

C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\UninstallAll\

by default. It will remove every bit of ATi-related software (including any
demos) off your hard drive. Reinstall drivers, then reinstall DX9.0c from
MS' web site.
