Catalyst Windows 98 / ME - Driver Download

.... says the following for Windows 98SE ...

===========================================================
Windows 98SE is supported through the Windows Millennium Edition driver.

For users that require a WHQL certified driver that is supported under Windows
98/98SE and Windows ME, ATI recommends using the Catalyst 4.3 drivers (Supports
Radeon 7000 through Radeon 9800 Series only).
===========================================================

Should I download and use the driver located on the above URL?
Or, find (which I can't) and use the Catalyst 4.3 drivers?

After installing both the ATI Catalyst 4.3 Control Panel and
the video card, I get the following message:
"The ATI Control Panel failed to initialize because
no ATI driver is installed, or ATI driver is not working properly.
The ATI Control Panel will now exit."

The "Settings" tab of Display properties shows
the display to be:
ViewSonic P815-4 on Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA)

Anyone know what is wrong?

Nope... Just curious as to what you might be doing? <g> Actually this is my
standard chunk of spit junk for this sort of thing...

Head to http://www.driverguide.com and login... Use the user: drivers and
password: all combination for now OR sign up and get your own. Root in there
until you find what you want. Usually they've been kind enough to test such
stuff prior to posting and there's user reviews and the likes. I'd recommend
signing up for your own account as they have been claiming (for a couple of
years now) that they're going to kill off the generic password and user
combination. (Err... They haven't yet... Who knows if they really will or
not?)

Best guess is that you have display mismatch caused by enumeration
problems - start fixing it by forcing re-enumeration of the display
devices....
Reboot to Safe Mode
Open Device Manager
Remove ALL Display Adapters
Remove ALL Monitors
Reboot to Normal Mode - Windows will reinstall the required drivers
once that's done, see whether the ATI loads properly or not - if not, then
reboot back into Safe Mode, and run the installer again.
See if that works.

(Are you using Norton?)

My understanding is that ATI has high confidence in their current
drivers, and that they should be used. The only reason they are not
WHQL certified is that Microsloth had dropped support for W98SE and no
longer certifies new drivers.

The ATI site is *exasperating* when it comes to trying to find older
drivers, but they are there. As for finding them, think of it as playing a
kind of puzzle or adventure game.

Get to a drivers page for Win98 and when you find it only provides the
latest (Catalyst 5.9) drivers, go to the search window and enter "previous
drivers"--this should eventually get you to a page which has "RADEON
Previous Windows ME Driver and Software versions"--which includes all
available drivers for Win98 and ME, including Catalyst 4.3 and associated
software.

Or try this, which should get you there directly:

Okay, I'll give the ATI Catalyst 5.9 drivers a try.

Uhm, maybe it wasn't a good idea after all.
My system crashes during the install leaving
lots of colored specs on my screen.

Well, I see that only gets you to the page with the search window. Again,
enter "previous drivers" in the search window and that will take you to the
page you want, though the page address doesn't change.

I tried searching ATI's website but still no luck.
Let me know if you're actually able to download the Catalyst 4.3 drivers.

Actually, I think I know what was wrong ...

ATI Catalyst 4.3 - Control Panel (no drivers)
http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=750

ATI Catalyst 4.3 - Windows 98/ME (driver only)
http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=747

But, the driver only link leads to nowhere. <sigh>

Here's a list of all the ATI Catalyst drivers ...

Now, why can't ATI provide something like this?

While I agree that the site is poorly layed out, there's no need to
search the entire site when the link for Catalyst v4.3 is accessible
from the ATI Customer Care left frame?

Just go here with your mouse:

ATI Customer Care > Drivers and Software > Windows ME > RADEON >
Previous Drivers and Software > CATALYST 4.3 Driver Build
4.14.01.91387-991-040224m-013831c
