Quicktime

MS Antispyware just allowed Quicktime to run at start
up. When I tried to manage it I get the message

You currently do not have any allowed or blocked Startup
Registry Entrys. These items are created when you decide
to either 'Allow' or "Black/Remove' an item by a Security
Agent.

Problem is I never allowed this. Spybot Teatimer always
asked me and I always denied. I do not need quicktime or
real player in my startup tray. The less crap I start
the better.

I so agree not a big fan of either product. MSAS does need the give the
user the ability to control programs that the user feels are unsafe or not
needed.

I find Spybot's startup management utility very convenient
(better than msconfig). Unchecked items are simply moved
from the run to the run- key (or if a shortcut in common
startup, the shortcut is disabled. If you want something
back, just check it again. Spybot advanced mode, Tools,
system startup.

Without justifying the behavior, I'd just observe that this doesn't work.
Even if you say "permanently block," these guys (quicktime, realplayer) will
be allowed, as known apps.

This is the right place to ask for a different behavior of course!

My experience with Realplayer is that there are options within the program
which allow you to remove it from the startup area and it stays gone. I
can't say the same for Quicktime.

Ages ago I found an option that removed it from startup but it eventually
came back. Once the spybot came along that problem was solved.

I thought that I remembered such an option, too. It may be that it existed
at some point in time, and disappeared in a succeeding version.

With QT, there are a lot of options which are checked by default. Unchecking
everything but the one you need seems to remove auto launch. Same for
RealPlayer (both are the "base & free version" and I update only when there
is a security warning)
