Quicktime in my taskbar!

Everytime I start up my computer (using Windows XP) there's a Quicktime icon in the lower right-hand corner of my screen on the taskbar thingy right beside the time. I can close it down from there but it annoys me that it's already running without my permission and for no good reason. I've searched my computer in Startup and I've looked through Quicktime and it's preferences but can't find a way to stop it from starting everytime Windows starts. What do I do

Load Quicktime. Go under the Edit -> Preferences -> QuickTime
Preferences. Select "Browser Plug-in" in the drop-down list. Uncheck
the option "QuickTime system tray icon". That will eliminate the icon.

That does not eliminate the superfluous qttask that gets ran on Windows
startup. Load msconfig.exe and click on the Startup tab. Find the
"qttask" startup item. Uncheck it. Click Okay and exit. On the next
reboot, it won't load. When you login, msconfig will popup a warning
that notifies you of the disable. Just check the box to not bother you
again with that notification. From now on, qttask will no longer get
loaded on Windows startup. Deleting it from the Run registry key might
not work. I've heard others complain that it can reappear after running
QuickTime.

Vanguard,

There is a better solution - uninstall Quicktime from the Add/Remove
Programs window and install QuickTime Alternative from
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/QuickTime_Alternative.htm

Hopefully Apple doesn't find out about Quicktime Alternative as that is
a trademark infraction. Saying a product supports Quicktime format is
not the same as titling your product using someone else's trademark.

Personally I have almost no need for Quicktime format. I rarely have
visited anywhere that has movies in them so I prefer to have the player
from the maker of the file format. Seemed really simple to me: disable
qttask using msconfig, configure the options to NOT show a tray icon,
done. I got the real thing but easily also got it out of the way. I
don't have to wander off somewhere else and trust an unknown codec
provider.
