Quick Ram Query

I've got a system with 512mb of ddr3200 RAM. Now when the system is
booting up it shows 499mb of RAM on the startup screen, and in windows
it tells me I've only got around 460-480 mb of RAM. I was just
wondering if this is anything to do with the fact it's running a
Celeron chip with an fsb of 133 (which would match it to a stick of
ddr2100) The only reason i bought the 3200 stick was that it's only
about £4 more expensive and I'm planning on upgrading to a P4 cpu
eventually (couldn't afford it this time). Is there a wasy of changing
the RAM to match it to the correct setting (ie ddr2100)
cheers for any help

Does this system have video integrated into the mainboard?

I doubt if your symptom is caused by PC3200 RAM. IF the system runs fine
(other than saying 499MB RAM), then the RAM you have is (most likely) fully
compatible with your motherboard. I was just wondering what else was in
that system to use the RAM. It's possible some of it is being used by your
video card. Thus, the system could be reporting the amount of RAM available
correctly, as it's using up to ~52MB for video display.

You don't want to mess with the RAM settings unless there is something wrong
with your system. Windows misreporting the amount of RAM is NOT a problem,
by itself. -Dave

Do you have onboard graphics? If so, Video display memory is 'borrowed'
from main memory. If you have graphics card, download and run a memory
tester.
