Quick question on Ancient 3D card

Gonzo

What ATI card is this card comparable too:

Nvidia GeForce 2 MX AGP

Im thinking that an ATi Radeon 7500 would be much faster right?
My Son needs a 3D card and I had a few old cards for him but don't remember
which ones were older. The Nvidia card I purchased by accident for $2. It
was in an ATi box LOL.

Thanks.

The Radeon 7500 was a rebranded Radeon256, if I remember correctly, which
was roughly on par with the Geforce2 GTS depending on color depth.

The Geforce2 MX was much slower, at least in those days . I guess it would
be about equal to a Radeon 7000.

BTW, according to the Valve hardware survey, Geforce2 MX outnumbers X850
roughly 5:2 in Half Life 2.

Half-Life2 on a GF2MX? Good lord. I think that qualifies
more as slideshow software than a game.

Gonzo, what cpu does your son's computer have? That would
help determine an appropriate video card for him. Lots of
decent cards are available on Ebay and elsewhere for just a
coupla dollars.

A 1 GHz Duron w/1 Gig of DDR DRAM.

He will have to save for a better card. So one of the two cards I mentioned
will have to do for now. Those are the fastest two cards I have in my 3D
video museum crap pile. They are free so he can't complain.

I did give him my old AIW8500 but it stopped working as soon as I put it
into his system. No clue why. Just a black screen. Think I fried it with
static electricity or something. Not the first time I did something dumb
like that.

Wouldn't be worth fitting a 7500 unless you already have it,
incompatibility is too high now if you have a choice. With (not cutting
edge but certainly DX8 or 9) games my daughter was hoping to play we
kept running into the lack of a pixel shader, and so on. I take it you
are asking as you want this to be a low budget job? I'd have thought,
and I'm no expert on budget cards, that the generally low low price of a
9550 would make it attractive to you for the benefits over a 7000 series
card.

No Sir, Im not buying a new card (yet). I have an X600 pcie in my system
personally.

This is for my Son's PC. He has no money for a new card and the 8500aiw I
gave him is dead so I have two older cards he can have to get his system
running again. Just needed to know which is faster of the two.

I figure the 7500 is at least one development step up from the gf2mx right?

You remember wrong. There never ever was a "Radeon256". There was a
Geforce256, though.

Hard to say. Basically, the Radeon 7000 aka Radeon VE comes close. The
Radeon 7000 is somewhat slower, though, because it lacks hardware T&L
that the GF2MX has...

The Radeon 7500 (which is basically a faster version of the original ATI
Radeon aka Radeon 7300) is around as fast as a Geforce2 GTS. The GF2MX
already was a lowend card when it came out and even can't hold up
against the first Geforce generation (Geforce256).

But one of the advantage of the GF2MX is that their OpenGL drivers are
still better than those of ATI Radeon cards. If that's really an
advantage depends on what you want to do with the card. If it's for
games then I'd take a Radeon 7500 any time over a GF2MX...

Ouch. There isn't much for games in this computer...
He will have to save for a better card.

If I were you I'd not sink any money in this computer any more. Better
save it and get something faster...
So one of the two cards I mentioned will have to do for now.

Then give him the Radeon 7500...
