Quick Launch Toolbar problems

G

Guest

I had to reinstall XP Pro and now when I try to put a shortcut in the Quick
Launch bar I get the message "Windows cannot access the specified device,
path or file. You must have the appropriate permissions to access". I have
admin privlidges and the path to the shortcut is correct. Doesn't matter
what shortcut it is the same thing happens. The only ones I have been able
to make work in the Quick Launch area is IE, Show Desktop, My Computer and a
link to my F drive. I had no problems prior to the reinstall. Have a new
hard drive. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Type in Start, Run:

%appdata%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch

Are you able to place the shortcuts in the above folder?

Is this problem seen with all the user accounts, or only one in particular?

If you have only one account, create another to test.

Ramesh,
I created an account called "Test" and gave this account admin rights. I am
able to make shortcuts in the Quick Launch bar with this account. Is there
a way to fix my other admin account so that I don't have to install and
change alot of settings? I appreciate your help.

Hi,

Type in Start, Run:

CMD /C REG QUERY
"HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders"
C:\ShFolders.txt

(Note that it's a single-line command)

Then open the file named C:\ShFolders.txt using Notepad, and post the
contents here.

AppData path is *incorrect*. Fix the "AppData" path.
Ref: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/usershellfolders.htm

"AppData" should be "%USERPROFILE%\Application Data"

Incorrect data: %USERPROFILE%\Cookies\Application Data

Hi

I tried the regedit and deleted cookies from the path. I then rebooted and
lost the quicklaunch function completely. Fortunately I backed up the reg
file as per your web site. Once I restored and rebooted I got the
quicklaunch back working. Back to square one. aLSO, SEE BELOW ABOUT tWEEKui.

Assuming that you've fixed the registry value correctly, then you need to
enable Quick Launch bar using these steps:

Right-click Taskbar, select Toolbars
Select "Quick Launch" to enable it.

Hi

I did try and eneable it again by right clicking, but it did not work. So I
restored the original reg file. Do I have to copy over any files to the new
directory?

I notice that under the wrong path "%USERPROFILE%\Cockies\Application Data,
there are several directories. Are these Microsoft, Identities, lavasoft,
help, logitech, etc. Do these need to be copied over to the new directory
"%USERPROFILE%\Application Data?

I appreciate the help?

but it did not work.

Did you see any error message when enabling the Quick Launch bar?

Yes. I think so, to preserve any application settings, and user
customizations. I have these folders within Application Data:

Adobe
AVG7
Google
Help
Identities
Lavasoft
Microsoft Web Folders
Microsoft

Specifically, the folder "Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick
Launch" is required for Quick Launch to function properly.

After fixing the registry value again, type in Start, Run:

IE4UINIT.EXE

Logoff and login again. Now enable the Quick Launch toolbar.

If you're concerned, take a registry backup using ERUNT. See here for
instructions:

Take a complete registry backup using ERUNT:
