quick keyboard question

hey all,

i am trying to get the hotykeys to work on a new keyboard - a m/s digital
media 3000. i have it configured but read somewhere that to try another
port, which i did to no avail, & this is their next suggestion:

"Method 2: Disable or uninstall any previously installed keyboard
softwareDisable any other keyboard control software installed on this
computer and then try reassigning the keys. "

before i do anything, i wanted to check first. i don't know where to
disable or remove the keyboard control software. is it thru device manager,
right click on k/b, then right clock on"hid keyboard device" then uninstall
it ? i'm betting i'm way off here.

any/all is much appreciated

Can someone answer this - is the "HID Keyboard Device" my old wireless KB
driver or is it part of the Dell set up & needed for any KB ?

Thanks

We can't really know the answer to that; we can't see your machine from
here.
HID simply means Human Interface Device; it's sort of a super-category.

Any keyboard you connect should work, even if it's not specifically
installed and as long as it's not a "special" of some sort. Normally, the
most you should have to do is set the keyboard to be a 101 key board and it
shold work. But then, that's the default too.

Device Manager is the simplest place to remove/replace hardware, IMO.
Start; Run; devmgmt.msc and click OK.

In my own computer, the optical mouse is located under "HID Compliant
Consumer Control Device" but to be sure that's what it is, you have to look
at the Properties for it. Double click it to see the Properties window where
you can turn it on/off, enable/disable, uninstall, etc., whatever choices it
may have. If you have any entries for "wireless", look there too.

Find the keyboards and Remove any that are not the one you're currently
using. If you DO remove the keyboard you're using, it should automatically
be reinstalled as a default keyboard, which should still work.

You could also use any wired KB long enough to do the uninstall/reinstall
for the wireless keyboard, then Shut Down, power off for 30 Seconds, and
start the computer. The wireless should then work.
It could also be a compatabilty issue: Check the docs or the online site
for that sort of thing.

thanks so very much twayne & yes, it helps a lot & will look into all you
said.

i tried this & had no luck:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932875

so i leave alone the hid entry in device manager ?

i was using a dell wireless, & now, the m/s digital media, wired k/b 3000.
what confuses me, among many things (!), is i didn't manually remove the
dell wireless k/b, so that is why i thought i may have to disable, or remove
the hid listed under k/bs in device manager.

i can also add, that it's just the 1-5 hot keys across the top, not the
email, home, messenger; tho the wmp takes a while to open using the wmp icon
key.

again, many thanks & will see what i can do with your tips.

Did you install the Microsoft Intellitype software? It should have been
included with the keyboard on a CD in the package. Most multimedia
keyboards have to have some sort of software installed in order to be able
to use the extra keys that are on it. The standard keyboard drivers in
Windows usually don't know what to do with the extra keys that are not on a
standard computer keyboard. You might get lucky and have a few of them
work, but to get all of them working you have to install the software that
came with the keyboard.

Ok, that's the software that they are telling you to reinstall, not the
keyboard drivers. You can do that by going to Control Panel - Add Remove
Software. Then scroll through the list looking for the Intellitype entry.

roy, thank you as i found it, the software listed in add/remove. i click on
change & of course it asks me if i want to remove it; it also has a checkbox
for saving documentation to my desktop - do i check that before removing or
leave it blank ?

thanks again roy

thanks twayne & not really done anything; i tried the steps ms provided, to
no avail. seems that most of the time, the pre labeled hot keys, i.e. home,
wmp, email & such generally work, it's the 5 hotkeys 1-5, that don't want to
be programmed as well as the one with the star, alleged to be the key that
will open the keyboard configuration box, or a simple listing - don't know
as it doesn't work & the weak instructions didn't even show the keys & their
functions.

so i leave the hid keyboard device be.

and i guess when i installed the software for the wired k/b, the wireless
k/b was removed ? abut not sure since there is a transmitter i still use for
my wireless mouse.

and lastly, dont understand how to check for compatibility - sorry

thanks again twayne

That's up to you to decide. If you save it and then later on find you don't
need it, you can always delete it.

roy, thanks so very much for your help as that seemed to do it! im not sure
why the original install of the software didn't do it, but the removal &
addition back has resolved it.

still one last question out of curiosity; what could have happened to the
program that ran the wireless dell k/b ? or since i am still using the
warless mouse & transmitter, it's still there under a name i was not looking
for.

again, many thanks roy!

twayne, thanks for all your help, & patience. i removed & installed the
software & it is now working. maybe the disconnecting of the k/b &
reconnecting it may have done the same thing ? of course, i have no clue!
thank you again twayne.
