Quick & easy way to restore a Windows 2000 server

Hi all,

I am in a workgroup environment with a Windows 2000 server acting as file
servver, DNS,DHCP and WINS server. It also has Notron Antivirus installed on
it. It does not have any RAID installed and I am using Arcserve 2000 to
backup the entire server.

If one day my server' s harddisk got bad sectors anyone can advice a
quickest way to restore the entire server?

I have a ghost image of the system and boot partition but that was quite
sometime ago.

The worst issue I think is the creation of user accounts and restoring of
the file and directories permissions.

Thanks for any advice

If you are getting good backups(verified and checked) and
are backing up the entire server including the system
state, then the quickest way is to:
1. install a new hard drive
2. install W2K and the Arcserve software
3. restore from backup

Depending on the severity of the hard disk errors, you may be able to
boot from the Ghost boot disk and copy the files from the old drive to
the new drive, and get yourself up and running without reinstalling
Windows, other software, etc. If it fails you could always reformat the
new drive and install from scratch.

If I install W2K and the Arcserve software on the new disk drive(C
partition) and do a full restore....
How can the restore be successful if Arcserve is restoring while Windows and
Arcserve itseld is running.

Chris,

Appreciate your kind advice, but when the harddrive got bad sector I will
not want to use it again. I will be working on a brand new harddrive.
If you have the money, evaluate PowerQuest's V2i Protector Server
Edition, http://www.powerquest.com/v2i/protector/server/. From that
site:

Highlights

Backup
Backup and protect Windows 2003, Windows 2000, and Windows NT servers.
Capture periodic full or incremental backups of system and data storage
volumes.
Create backups without interrupting data access or application usage.
Encapsulates ALL files, configurations, drivers, and system
personalities in one easy to manage backup file.

Recovery
Recover bare metal systems in minutes.
Quickly roll systems back to any incremental point-in-time backup.
Mount backup image files as read-only drives which can be shared and
accessed by others for easy data access.
Browse and recover files directly from any point in time backup image
file.

I tested the bare metal recovery and it appeared to work just fine.

One word of caution: I have found their tech support to be a bit of a
letdown, but this was on their CONSUMER products. I have no experience
with their corporate tech support.

Finally, I have no affiliation with PowerQuest.
