Questions - Prepping Upgrade from 98 to XP

Hyall. Some questions if you don't mind indulging a
newbie.

I'm currently running 98 on my 3-year old Compaq Presario
and have a need to upgrade to XP. My Presario came with a
factory restore disk which I've had to use a number of
times with success each time.

Some questions:
1. When I install the XP upgrade, if I have to use my
Presario's factory restore disk again, will I have to
install XP all over again? (Or does XP allow you to
create your own restore disk?)

2. I have Microsoft Office 2000 installed. A general
question: does installing the XP upgrade require re-
installation of things like Office 2000, or any other
software I currently have on my computer? I really need
to know if I NEED to make a backup of all of
my .docs, .xls, .ppts, etc. before installing the
upgrade. (I realize this is probably a good idea, but I
need to know if this is REQUIRED, i.e., they'll be wiped
out, or if "they should still be there".)

3. Is Microsoft Office 2000 compatible with XP? (Maybe I
should have made this question 2.)

Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Hi Marty,
Hyall. Some questions if you don't mind indulging a
newbie.

Ok, shoot.
I'm currently running 98 on my 3-year old Compaq Presario
and have a need to upgrade to XP. My Presario came with a
factory restore disk which I've had to use a number of
times with success each time.

Yuck, but go on.
Some questions:
1. When I install the XP upgrade, if I have to use my
Presario's factory restore disk again, will I have to
install XP all over again? (Or does XP allow you to
create your own restore disk?)

Once WinXP is installed, the only time you would ever need to use the
restore disks is if you buy only an upgrade version and decide to start from
scratch. Otherwise, the WinXP CD can be used repeatedly to repair the
existing installation, though you may never find it necessary to do so.

An upgrade generally leaves all installed software intact, but that is no
excuse not to backup important data files before you begin.
3. Is Microsoft Office 2000 compatible with XP? (Maybe I
should have made this question 2.)

Sure it is.

The biggest issue you may encounter is finding proper drivers to support the
proprietary hardware used in building the Compaq machine. Check with them
(Compaq) as well to see if the upgrade is recommended for this system.
