The monitor relies on convection cooling. There are vents near the top,
to let the heat out (heat from the CCFL tubes).

Does it matter if it gets a little warm ?

Probably not.

LCD panels can vary from 30 watts to 200 watts. A display
drawing 200W is too large to lift over your head like that.
One rated for 30 watts, probably wouldn't be upset too much
if turned sideways.

Feel the back of the thing after it has been on for a while,
in the flat position. If you burn yourself, then turn it
back the right way If it's just warm to the touch,
then it'll probably survive.

Some monitors have the power supply (110VAC to 12VDC) inside
the panel, and the poor quality electrolytics they use in there,
can sometimes suffer if there is too much heat over
a prolonged period (months). Even when not abused, that's
a common failing point for modern monitors - the power supply
gives out. Making it hot, only accelerates the process, if
the caps aren't good ones to begin with. I'm quite happy
my monitor uses a wall adapter, as if it fails, all I have
to do is find another 12V adapter to connect to the panel.
