Question regarding IE favorites.

I have a favorites folder called Tech. In this folder I have a few
websites. I want to be able to sort them not by name but by the order in
which *I* put them in order. I can do this through organize my favorites
but when I click on the folder, the sites are all sorted by name. How can I
fix this so that when I click on the folder, it shows the websites in the
order in which I choose it to be.

Basically I have a folder caled Links which has sub-folders called Tech.
When I click on the sub-folder within the parent folder, the links in the
sub-folder are all sorted by Name. I'd like to have it sorted by the way I
sort it. I can do this within Organize Favorites but as soon as I attempt
to navigate to the folder within IE, the links are all sorted by Name again.

Uncheck autoarrange under view/"arrange icons by" - it will have no effect
on the visual you see when you access favorites, but will allow you to
rearrange them to your liking in the folder.

Ok thanks. However, that doesn't help in what I'm trying to achieve which
is to sort the favorites in Internet Explorer by the way I'd like them to
appear. I'm almost certain that this is not possible as Internet Explorer
will override the way they appear. However, the only thing that gives me
hope is if it's in the main favorites, and not in my Links folder as a
sub-folder like C:\Documents and Settings\User\Favorites\Links\Sublinks but
rather in C:\Documents and Settings\User\Favorites\Links, I can easily move
and sort the favorites however I'd like and they appear in Internet Explorer
the same way. I'm wondering if I export and then import the registry key
for sort for Favorites if it would have any affect on my Links folder.

The display order for favorites is found under this reg key:

"HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MenuOrder\Favorites"

It should have a number of subkeys, each corresponding to a subfolder of the favorites folder. These keys can have subkeys as well, if the corresponding folder has subfolders. Each key contains one binary value named 'Order', which retains the preferred display order.

Do you have a subkey for the folder in question?

Once I altered the order of links in a subfolder via 'Organize Favorites..." , that order was reflected when favorites were accessed via the 'Favorites' menu in IE, the Favorites explorer bar (left-hand pane), and the cascading Favorites menu from the Start Panel. The only order it does not affect is when the folder is viewed via Explorer -- then the sort options are the same as any other folder.

You can monitor the registry & see if the 'Order' value is being altered when you make changes using RegMon from:

http://www.sysinternals.com/

use an 'Include' filter string like this:

*HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MenuOrder\Favorites

and you'll be able to watch the key being accessed and altered.

Good Luck,
Keith
