Question re: Local Area Connection Status

I have two computers connected with a crossover cable. OldComp runs
Win98 and NewComp run WinXP Home.
I can see on the system tray on the NewComp the Local Area Connection
icon blinking all the time even that I am not sending or receiving
anything.
When I doubleclick that icon I see that packets are being sent and
received.
Who/what is doing it? How do I stop that?

It is not a virus! It is a settin in the Network Connection --> Local Area
Connection properties: "Show icon in notification area when connected"

Remobe the check mark.

Yves,

You are misreading the OP. Something is sending/receiving on the
computer. Turning off the icon in the System Tray won't stop that.
