I note that there is a line enry list of every program that I have
accessed and used in Start. With time this list grows to enormous
proportions. Is there a way to prevent these programs from appearing
in Start?

Thanks in advance

Frank

Do you mean in the Run command (Start | Run) Open box list?

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\RunMRU

RunMRU listing - Sources
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/rundel.htm

Besides the Run MRU (Most Recently Used) list, this also clears...

IE History, AutoComplete, Clear the TIF, Clear the Run MRU, Typed
URL's and Clear List:

XP Start Menu:
You have to switch to Classic long enough to get the Clear button.
Right click the Start button | Properties | Select Classic Start Menu |
Customize button | Clear button | Click OK | Select Start menu | Click Apply
|Click OK

Classic Start Menu:
Right click the Start button | Properties | Customize button | Clear button

Clear button
[[Removes the list of recently accessed documents, programs, and Web sites
from the Documents menu.]]

The XP Start Menu Clear button does not clear the Run MRU. The Classic
Start Menu Clear button will clear everything in the Run MRU.

I'm not the one with the issue. Please be careful which message in the
thread you reply to.

However Registry Cleaners are extremely dangerous programs to use, and I
advise against them.

must havehit wrong reply button.. oh well..

Thanks to all responders -I guess I wasn't clear in my query. What I
was referring to is the list of applications that are shown in the
left pane of the box that appears when the Start button is clicked in
the lower left corner of the task bar.

I'm not sure what this is called, but with my pc when the box appears,
the topmost line reads Owner and below that is System Restore and
Adobe Reader 7 below that is a dividing line and below that is a list
of applications/programs that have been accessed. It is this listing
of recently accessed programs that I questioned and wondered if it is
possible to prevent since it seems to grow to ponderous lengths with
time.

On the right side of the box are a list of My Documents, My Computer,
My Pictures, My music, COntrol Panel, etc.

Hope this clarifies my original question.

Hi Frank,

That is called the Start Menu.

The left side of the Start menu contains the programs list, which is divided
into two sections, the "pinned list" (at the top) and the Most Frequently
Used (MFU) list. The two sections are separated by a line. The functions of
these lists are as follows:

Pinned list:
The pinned list allows users to place shortcuts to programs and other items
in the Start menu. It will be pre-populated with the user's default Web
browser and e-mail program (these can be removed).

MFU list:
The list of most frequently used programs (MFU list) appears below the
Pinned list on the Start menu. This list keeps track of how often programs
are used and displays them in order of most used (top) to least used
(bottom). Programs can be removed from this list by right-clicking them and
clicking Remove from This List. The order of the items in this list cannot
be manually arranged (they are arranged according to how often they are
used). At the bottom of the MFU list is the All Programs menu, which
displays other programs that are installed.

I snipped it, read more here...

You can remove the Most Frequently Used list from the Start Menu completely.

Go here...

Read the instructions at the top.
Scroll down to...
133. Restore Most Frequently Used - Undo
Click on Undo.

mfuprogramsundo.reg is the file that you want.

mfuprogramsundo.reg sets NoStartMenuMFUprogramsList to 1 which Removes the
frequently-used programs list from the Start menu.

mfuprogramsundo.reg also sets Start_MinMFU to 0 which is the Number of
programs on Start Menu.

Start_MinMFU does the same thing as doing this...
Right click the Start button and click Properties.
On the Start Menu tab click the Customize button.
Set: Number of programs on Start Menu to = 0.

Number of programs on Start Menu:
[[Specifies the maximum number of programs to display in the most frequently
used programs list on the Start menu. You can increase or decrease the
number.]] If set to 0, no programs will display after the Clear List button
has been clicked.

Clear List button:
[[Click to delete the shortcuts displayed in the most frequently used

computer. The next time you run a program, its shortcut is displayed on the
Start menu.]]
