Question on MS Communities Postings

J

Janter

I recently got my first Vista. I have had some questions so I have read a
lot of postings in Mail, Word, and Office, which have been helpful. I've
even posted a couple of questions. My thanks to the responders.

However, now when I call up a Community, which I think is the same as a
newsgroup, all the previous postings are still there, and they continue to
accumulate. I tried unsubscribing but they are all there when I
re-subscribe. There are thousands of them little buggers with no end in
sight.

Question: Are these postings all stored on my computer? Temporarily?
Permanently?
Possible answer: No, they arrive from cyberspace when selected, and go away
when not selected. (That would be good.)
Possible answer: Yes. (That would not be good.)

I think the answer is probably NO, but my record of out-guessing Mr. Gates
is not good.

Can someone briefly enlighten me with what is happening or, if there is a
more appropriate group, tell me where I can find an explanation? I already
checked on MS.public.news.server and that didn't look promising.

Thanks

Janter

They are stored on your computer until Windows Mail discovers that they have
been deleted from the server.

Frank, thanks for the quick response.

I'm a little slow when it comes to computer talk (or a lot slow) so I'm not
sure what "...until Windows Mail discovers that they have been deleted from
the server." means.

How does discovery happen?

Might that happen later today or sometime about when Mr. Gates issues a
replacement for Vista?

Can I influence how much/many is/are stored on my computer?

Is the storage requirement large enough to be concerned about?

Can I delete them like temporary internet files? Where are they stored?

Additional info would be appreciated.

Thanks much. I really appreciate you MVPs. A valuable asset to MS and users.

You can set to have the downloaded messages deleted after a certain number
of days.
Tools- Options - Advanced - Maintenance
[x] Purge newsgroup messages in the background
[x] Delete news messages xx days after being downloaded

By Jove, Dave, I think you've got something there. I'll work on it.

Thanks a bunch.

The discovery doesn't happen until you visit the newsgroup again. Usually
for the Microsoft servers that's 60 to 90 days.

Om Windows Mail, Tools | Options | Advanced | Maintenance | Store Folder
will tell you where the downloaded messages are stored. They are usually
hidden files.
