Question on i9900

C

Craig

I went several stores (CompUSA, Staples, etc) in town.
I could not find Canon 8500 printer but I saw i9900 printer.
Before buying this unit, I have some questions.

Is i9900 chipped or not? It does not look chipped. The salesman did not
know about it.
If it is not chipped, I can use non-OEM inks for this printer.

Secondly, this printer is designed for printing 13x19 larger papers. I use
only letter size papers for printing flyers.
I am wondering if I would have problems with printing letter size papers.
If not, I am tempted to buy this printer.
Please advise me. Craig

It is not chipped. There are two new models on the way.

No more an issue than using 4x6 paper in a letter sized printer... in
fact you can usually put in your paper sideways and get a letter sized
print in less head strokes.

I would say order the i8500 from their website, or newegg, but it seems
they are in as short supply as you sugest. I can see a few places
listed on froogle.com that have it, but no company i've heard of.
http://consumer.usa.canon.com/ir/controller?act=WhereToBuyIndexAct
lists a couple of stores for me that would carry it but no real
assurance of anyone actually having it. You'd have to phone the shops
listed.

WHO CARES. IT IS AS GREAT PRINTER AND BE SURE TO USE OEM INK SO YOU DO
NOT CLOG IT.

YOU GOOTA BE SO STUPID TO RISK ONE OF THE BEST PRINTERS OUT THEIR SO
SOME WHORE CAN MAKE MONEY AND SELL YOU SOMETHING WITH OUT DISCLOSING
WHAT YOU ARE BUYING AND GIVING YOU A POTENTIAL FOR CLOGGING YOUR
PRINTER. THE ONLY REASON YOU SHOULD EVEN CONSIDER THIS IS IF YOU ARE A
VERY VERY HEAVY PHOTO PRINTER.

AND YOU NEED TO BE CAREFUL ABOUT FADING AND CONSISTENCY OF THE INK

YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN YOU WANT TO PRINT A 11X14 PHOTO.

NOW THE IP8500 DOES HAVE DUAL PAPER FEED AND CAN PRINT DUPLEX. THE
NEWLY RELEASED REPLACEMENT FOR THE I9900 DOES HAVE DUAL PAPER FEED BUT
CANNOT PRINT DUPLEX.

I have this printer (i9900). It is not chipped. I have had it for almost
two years now and I print everything from 4x6 to 13x19 borderless
prints. It is a very good printer.
Now for the ink:
I never, ever buy oem ink after the originals runs out. I now use
Hobbicolor in this printer with terrific results. It does not matter
whether you are a very heavy printer or just a casual printer, after
market inks are an excellent way to go.

As zakezue advised, I looked for ip8500.
ip8500 is now certain to be almost extinct.
One unit is "possibly" available for $339.00 + S/H.

i9900 is currently available for $411 + S/H from Newegg.
It now appears that owning an i9900 seems to be more cost-effective.

I have a question for Frank. Any opinion on the performance of MSI ink
(from Costco) vs. Hobbicolor? Craig

Right now I prefer Hobbicolor. The color matching is as good as it gets,
at least for me.

Craig - Excuse me for jumping in as you asked Frank to reply. As I recall,
the ink from Costco (MSI or IMS?) is touted as a universal ink. Avoid all
"universal" inks! There are some excellent choices of aftermarket inks that
are formulated for your printer. I have an i960 (six color) and and ip5000
(four color plus pigmented black) and use MIS bulk inks to refill. Color
balance is so close to the OEM inks that side-by-side comparison prints look
nearly alike. Formulabs inks have a very good reputation and are available
on the internet at Alotofthings. I've also seen good reports from credible
users, one of whom is Frank, for Hobbicolors. Granddad, an extremely
knowledgable participant in the Nifty-Stuff forum, has posted color profiles
for the i9900, Formulabs inks, and Costco 8.5x11 photo paper. That might be
a plus to consider. Considering that the Hobbicolors kit includes empty
cartridges, it is the least expensive option. Regardless of which one you
choose, they all save you a lot of money. Go onto the Nifty-stuff forum as
there is excellent info regarding refilling techniques and printer
maintenance, primarily for Canon printers but with some HP and Epson info as
well.

Good price for the i9900. I was at staples a few days ago and they had the
i9900 on sale with a rebate. Check locally to see what is available at
Staples, Office Depot, etc, as you might be able to match the price or come
close and have recourse with a local vendor. I bought three new ip5000
printers about two months ago at Staples on an unadvertised closeout at $100
each.

If you plan to refill manualy, and you don't plan to buy refillable
cartridges, then the new chipped printers are an option. They will
accept more ink, you just need to use OEM cartridges. You do have to
disable the ink meter, it will pop up and ask "warning continuing
printing will possibly cause damage" or something to that effect. But
if you plan to use non-oem cartridges... like refillable or
prefilled... there presently isn't a solution that i'm aware of.

But it's possible you absolutly must have the 8 color printer. As
Measekite has pointed out the i9900 doesn't have some features that the
ip8500 would. CD printing is handy is the only real feature that i9900
totally lacks. But $425 is totally worth it. Claiming warranty status
from newegg seems to be easy as pie, I didn't have to submit my
paperwork for my mp760 that was defunct.

The new printers are chipped, and are not presently out.

Most notable is the pro9500 which offers pigment ink. This I will keep
a close eye on to see if it's the same ink they sell in their 125ml
cartridges for their new wide printers. If so there would be an option
to use OEM at only 1/2 the cost, but that data is presenly unavailable
as these printers have not hit the market yet. But to be clear, the
pro9000 is chipped with cli-8 tanks, and the pro9500 is likely chipped
with PGI-?i tanks.

I'll jump in like burt.

MSI - does not exist
MIS - www.inksupply.com
IMS - Costco

MIS sells Image Specalists ink. It's OK stuff. According to the tests
i've seen it's not as fade resistant as OEM.

IMS from costco is generic ink and simply is not reccomended. There is
a visiable difference in print quality from OEM or even MIS on an older
canon... BJ-2000 IIRC. I'll work.. but will fade *so fast* from my
experence. In all fairness it's 1/2 the price of MIS. Near as i'm
aware they don't offer Red or Green ink.

Hobbicolors I know nothing about personaly, though I do plan to order
some as the price of the ink and blank cartridges is as low as a set of
blanks from elsewhere.
