My outlook has been closed since WEDnesday and I opened it today and all the
mail was already downloaded as if it were open the last 5 days , could
someone help me understand how the mail service works, such as "is it
independent of outlook" is it another discrete program.

If you don't connect to an Exchange server, Outlook does not receive mail
when closed. Sounds like outlook.exe was kept running in the background when
you thought it was shut down. Version/mode/SP level of Outlook? (help |
about). Also, do you use any fax/handheld sync software or other addins, and
if so, what kind?
